Journey Under the Midnight Sun

“My sky has no sun—

only endless night.

Yet it isn’t dark,

because something else has taken its place.

It isn’t as bright as the sun,

but for me, it’s enough.

With that light,

I can turn night into day.

I’ve never had a sun,

so I’m not afraid to lose it.”

— Keigo Higashino, Journey Under the Midnight Sun

I read Journey Under the Midnight Sun again that year.

And once more,

I felt the same quiet chaos—

the same grief,

the same strange stillness.

I loved the heroine.

When she spoke those words,

she revealed her truest self—

a girl too wise for her years,

weathered and weary,

hiding her soul behind beauty and grace,

living as if in light,

while drowning in night.

Was she happy?

Or only pretending?

A lifetime of disguise and endurance,

and still,

the story never ends.

Keigo Higashino wrote:

“The sun rises and sets each day,

and so does life—

day and night, light and shadow.

But unlike the sun,

our nights and days

don’t follow a schedule.

Some live forever in sunlight,

while others

must walk through endless dark.

What we fear most

is not the night,

but the fading of light.”

Yes.

Many things never truly vanish;

they just sink beneath the surface,

while those on shore

cannot see.

Do you know white night?

It’s when the sun never sets—

when night shines like day.

But if we linger too long in hesitation,

life itself fades away.

Because there is no such thing

as a happy night.
