To Bow to Wang Yangming

“只在涵养上用功,每天能发现自己的不足;

日感不足之人,德行将渐有余;

是知识与见闻;

是虚空;

To Bow to Wang Yangming

Written in 2015 by Kisa Li

Master Wang Yangming once said:

“When you cultivate only your inner virtue,

you find your shortcomings every day.

When you cultivate only your external knowledge,

you feel sufficient every day.

Those who sense their lack daily

will see their virtue increase.

Those who feel sufficient daily

will see their virtue fade.”

In Instructions for Practical Living,

this is one of the few passages

where he speaks of the unity of inner and outer work.

In his time,

the outer meant knowledge and vision;

the inner meant cultivation of the heart.

But now,

the outer means the face—

and the inner?

Hardly remembered.

People have forgotten

that culture and virtue

were once entwined.

Inner refinement without learning

is hollow.

Knowledge without heart

is arrogance.

Most of his disciples were officials—

learned, moral, resilient.

But what moves me most

is his light within darkness,

his mind that never abandoned its source.

When I first read his biography,

I was astonished.

His life, his intuition,

felt like a mirror of my own.

I too have known that question:

“When I am calm, my thoughts are clear;

but when things arise, I lose myself.”

I knew how to cultivate in stillness,

but not to restrain in movement.

Only through facing the world

can one achieve the balance—

still in stillness,

still in motion.

I cannot yet reach his state,

but I remember:

our nature resides in the heart.

When things happen,

seek the source first,

then act.

In my darkest seasons,

I faltered.

I hid.

I thought silence would make the storm pass.

Yet in darkness,

I found a light.

Not in escape,

but in returning to the self.

Like Master Wang in Longchang,

who met despair

and turned it into illumination.

He read, thought, endured,

and held to his truth

amid corruption and deceit.

He walked the world with kindness

and withdrew with clarity.

He sought to exhaust the Principle of Heaven

until not a trace of selfish desire remained.

Such a man—

how can one not bow?

And so,

I too have learned to say,

with quiet pride and gratitude—

For life, I bow to Wang Yangming.
